The glazing work was carded out at Culham Laboratory, Atomic Energy Authority, Abingdon, using a 5kW C02 laser. 5mm) defocused distances (DFD's) with traverse velocities of 5 and 10 mms"l in a pure nitrogen or helium environment and a gas flow rate of 50 lminl were utilised. The calculated energy densities of the applied laser beam with 30 and 50 mm DFDs were 373, 224 and 186, 112 MJrn"2 for 5 and 10 mms"~velocities respectively. Standard techniques were used to prepare metaUographic samples. The polished samples were chemically etched in a solution of 10 cm3 of hydrofluoric acid, 30 cm3 of nitric acid and 50 crn3 of water for a period of 5s.
