They were sort of right. I developed my first crush, and secretly spent time thinking about that person. I had begun to accept the fact that people falling in love is part of our everyday lives. When I began high school it suddenly hit me that everyone had grown up, while I was still a child. Everyone seemed like they were experts on dating, since many had practically started at age four. They knew everything and could give advice as if they were trained professionals. I, on the other hand, had never gone out with a single person, nor had anyone shown the slightest bit of interest in me.

His battle was viewed as courageous; he became a local hero. Why is it that people with terminal illness are so respected for fighting for a cure until the end? Do they even have a choice? The focus always lies in finding a physical remedy. Do everything and anything you can to battle the disease. What have you got to lose? Don’t give up. Rarely do you find people looking for a type of healing that restores the soul. I guess that’s just not good enough. Death meant failure, and that was unacceptable.

As I saw it, I had two choices—to give up and give in, or to fight. After showering and trying to make my body look human, I got into my car and drove. I cried, and my mind was spinning.
