In the past, when all animation was done by hand, a director or team of artists prepared storyboards with sketches of the action for each scene. Then a senior key animator used the storyboards to create the layouts, or basic drawings for each scene. Finally a team of key animators drew the key frames—the main drawings that begin and end each action or motion. The job of 55 connecting the key frames with a series of drawings to make a movement look natural was done by an inbetweener—an apprentice artist working usually for minimal pay.
Like a movie director blocking out a scene, manga artists lay out each page to emphasize a certain action or emotion. They make sure that the reader’s eye will flow easily from panel to panel in a logical progression. They adjust the size and number of panels to control the flow of time in their stories. Fewer panels quicken the pace, while more panels slow the action. A single battle may spread out over dozens of pages with very little dialogue. One famous wordless confrontation between samurai unfolded for a tense series of panels as the glint of the rising sun ascended to the tips of their raised swords.
